Troubleshooting
You may experience difficulties viewing some or all of this web site if:
1. You are using Netscape Communicator on a Macintosh
2. You are using a Macintosh
3. You do not have a fast Internet connection.

1. This site is optimized for viewing in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). Click here to download Internet Explorer. If you are using Netscape Communicator on Windows or Macintosh, please consider downloading IE before looking at the site. Using Netscape on a Macintosh may cause your screen to flash when you change pages, which is particularly distracting when reading any of the essays. Click here to download MS Internet Explorer 5.0.

2. This site is best viewed on a Windows PC computer, using IE. If you are using a Macintosh, there are two areas of difficulty:

· You will be unable to view any of the video interviews and lectures. At this time, the video on this site can only be viewed using IBM's Video Charger, which is only available for Windows. We hope to be able to make the video available on the Mac in a future version of this web site in 2002.

· This site is multilingual, with German and Polish translations of the essays, and foreign words in the art labels and descriptive text. The support for the full range of diacritical marks on the Macintosh is only available using System 9.X software; additionally, it's necessary to do a custom install of the foreign language character sets to properly view Polish text. Keep in mind, however, that if it's not crucial to view all the special Polish characters with complete accuracy, it will probably not hinder your appreciation for the text or images to see a few misplaced characters.

However, if you are on a Macintosh with System 9.X OS and you would like to view the site with perfect display of Polish diacritics, please click here to download a PDF file with instructions for doing a custom install of the extended character sets. It will be easiest if you print out the PDF file using Acrobat Reader (see above in Essays section) so that you can follow the printed instructions while you perform the steps.

3. This site is best viewed with a fast Internet connection. Without a fast connection, you will have difficulty viewing the streaming video interviews and lectures. The following connections are listed in order of preference:

Internet2 is ideal, for those on a university campus. You need a Switched Ethernet connection to your computer.

T1 connection to your building A T1 works, although video will be jerky, may break up and may not work at all unless you are one of only a few people using the Internet at that time.

DSL, Cable modem or ISDN You will be able to view text and graphics only, no video.

Modem over phone line: You can view text and graphics only, no video.
