CZESŁAW KACZMARCZYK

Born August 22, 1899 in Kovno, Lithuania; died February 18, 1971 in Warsaw, Poland

Background
Kaczmarczyk studied at the University of Kiev in 1918, at Warsaw University 1922-26, and at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts 1925-30.  He worked as a graphic artist.

Arrest and Deportation to Auschwitz
October 23, 1943, he was arrested and incarcerated in Pawiak prison and on November 11, 1943, he was deported to Auschwitz, receiving prisoner number 162142.

Work Assignments at Auschwitz
Kaczmarczyk was initially assigned to the camp museum, where he made portraits, and later sent to work in the print shop and at the SS firm Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke.

Deportation to Subcamps of Natzweiler-Struthof and Dachau
November 11, 1944, he was transferred to Leonberg, a subcamp of Natzweiler-Struthof, and in 1945, was sent to Kaufering, Ampfing, and Mühldorf, all subcamps of Dachau.

Liberation and After
Kaczmarczyk was liberated on May 3, 1945.  Following the war, he returned to Warsaw to work as a teacher and artist, producing many oil paintings and watercolors about Auschwitz.
